Wildlife

The Babine area is one of the worlds last remaining natural habitats for many species including Grizzly bears, lynx, and wolves.  The area is rich with salmon which supports this ecosystem of splendid predators and great expanses of wilderness are home to multitudes of deer, elk, moose and smaller animals.  Below is a sample of the diverse local fauna.

A grizzly bear feeds on dead fish in the river.

Moose calf and cow crossing the river in the early dawn mist.  The cow uses her body to break the current, making it easier for the calf.

June is calving month.  The cows will be showing up along shore with their new light brown babies.  Troll with us for the mighty lake trout and share a once in a lifetime opportunity to view a newborn calf following it's mother accross the beach to lake.  We have even witnessed the dynamics of life as grizzlies stocked the newborn and the mothers struggle to stay ahead.

During the sockeye spawning season bald eagles congregate to feast.  The Eagles stay until the last of the salmon bodies have rotted in the rivers then they migrate South, usually at the end of October.  Here are 2 juvenile eagles waiting their turn on the river bank.

Trumpeter swans on the lake.  They are getting a lecture from our son on proper dinning etiquette.
